Abdominal Hernia

As we all know there are several different types of hernias that can develop in our bodies. One of the most popular of all of these is the abdominal hernia, also known as the incisional hernia. This develops inside of the stomach when the intestines are pushing through the weak tissue in the abdominal wall.

Most of us want to know what causes this problem so that we are better able to prevent it from affecting us or even from hurting us to begin with. Unfortunately there are a number of things that can cause this. The most common is that you have had surgery in the past and it was not able to heal properly. Other causes include;

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Straining
  • Heavy lifting
  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity

When the doctor has discovered the problem and discussed it with you than they will sit down and also discuss the most common treatments that you should be using. One that is becoming more popular is open surgery. During open ventral hernia repair the doctor will make use of the Bard Composix Kugel patch. This is used to eliminate the tension and strain that the intestines are putting on the muscles and ligaments in the abdominal cavity. Most patients prefer this treatment option because it helps to reduce the amount of discomfort felt after the surgery is complete.

During the procedure the doctor will insert the patch through a small incision. It will lie flat against the abdominal wall with a few stitches holding it in place. The mesh will allow the healthy tissue to grow and to create a strong and more permanent repair. The entire procedure will take a couple hours. Before you make a final decision you need to discuss the risks with your doctor.
